That is what it was like when Mrs Leishout’s group went to tramp on ULVA ISLAND to see the native and beautiful wildlife. It was lovely and peaceful. There were birds tweeting and some Cheeky kaka playing around. I just wanted to get started! I could feel the EXCITEMENT and AMAZEMENT starting to build up in me too!! ULVA ISLAND is the largest of several small Islands situated in Paterson Inlet. Once we were getting started All that I could see and hear was excitement and amazement!
We had a DOC lady called Diana to take us round some of the walking tracks at ULVA ISLAND. Diana told us the historical story of ULVA ISLAND. She started with the historical story about the ULVA ISLAND Post Office. It has been there for a long time. All the letters from Stewart Island had been sent there and were delivered to people near ULVA ISLAND. It is now owned by a family
My group saw all the native plants like the Rimu and the Rata tree. We also saw the native yellow crowned parakeet. When we spotted the beautiful bird we were all as quiet as a mouse.
After we walked a few tracks we went down to Sydney Cove (which is a small but beautiful beach.) We all had our delicious packed lunch on the lovely beach. The sand flies were a BIG pain and very ANNOYING!
After lunch we did a treasure hunt Diane set up for us. We had to get into groups and search all around Sydney Cove for different birds, seaweed, trees and plants. There was a little tiny cave! Just at that minute when everyone was looking at the cave someone spotted penguin foot prints!!!!!!
After that we walked back to the wharf to wait for the boat to pick us up.
We all had a FANTASTIC, AWESOME, FUN, EXCITING time on ULVA ISLAND! I would recommend it to anyone visiting Stewart Island to tramp the AWESOME ……….
ULVA ISLAND!!!!!!
