ARROWTOWN………......GAOL

Arrowtown Museum? Now doesn’t that sound very interesting…?

Did you know that there was a jail in Arrowtown in 1875? But the
weird thing about this jail is that it only had four cells. The two back
ones were mostly for the women because in those days people thought women were less likely to get out.

Another interesting thing was we spell our jail like this:
“Jail” but back then they spelled it like this: “gaol”.
I have two more things to tell you about the goals in Arrowtown.
It has 4 cells in it jail and jails today have loads
more cells . The lucky last thing is in the Arrowtown jail
is that they have a fire in one of the back cells. This was the cell for women and because they thought women were not as strong as men they looked after them differently and kept them warm.

This is a short story we got told by Angela the Teacher at the Museum
in Arrowtown!
There was a lady called Mary Crotter that always wanted to do something
bad during June and July. The bad things that she did were things like
knocking off the policemen’s hat or swearing at him.
Do you know what type of season it was during June and July? It was winter, she did it at that time every year just so she could get into the gaol just to be very warm during the winter because the cell had a fire and she was cold.

The Arrowtown Butcher and Baker.
Angela the Museum teacher told us another story about a man that owned a bakery and butchery. He had his own recipe to his magnificent sausages. All of the Arrowtown people loved his sausages. He always had this little pipe in his mouth and healways had it in his mouth, every time he was making his sausages. Little bit of his dribble second by second came down the side of his mouth and it kept coming and dropping into the sausage mixture.

One day the man was thinking about selling the butchery to another man. When the new owner made the sausages the customers didn’t think they were as good as the old owners.
So the new owner asked the old butcher what his secret recipe was so that he could put it into his sausages so when the old guy that used to work there he was mixing the sausages. When the new owner watched the old butcher, he saw that his dribble was going
into the sausages. Then he realised that his secret recipe was his dribble.
