OUR SHADE EXPERIMENT

The shade moved from the east to the west during the day. Our shade diagram shows us where the shade cloth should be.

It moved because the earth rotates throughout the day.

We need to measure the area where the shade cloth needs to be.

We will attach the shade cloth to the corridor wall so the sun can’t come through the gap. This will stop us getting reflected U.V. rays under the cloth and we will also have more shade in the classroom. So it won’t be as bright in the classroom in the summer and the interactive whiteboard will work better.

We did the survey at 9:15am, 12:15pm and 2:30pm to check were the shadows were.

We took pictures of the tree at each time of the day to make sure we didn’t get the data wrong. When we went out at each of the three times to collect our data we had to record which position the shade was in on a plan of the courtyard.

Questions we have.
What colour does the shade cloth need to be?
Blue / green or purple.

We need to know how thick the shade cloth needs to be so the ultra violet light doesn’t go through.

Shade
We will put the shade cloth on the east side of the courtyard because the sun comes up on the east. We are going to attach the shade cloth to the building where the sun comes up so that it blocks the sun and we get shade. The sun casts a shadow in a different position in the courtyard at different times of the day. The shade from the tree is normally on the west or the south side of the tree. We will attach the shade cloth to the building so that no sunlight gets reflected off the ground and under the cloth.

Ideas:
Take a photo of the area.
Take the measurement with metre measuring tapes.
Find out the right position for the shade cloth using old tarpaulins so we know where to put the shade cloth.

Conclusion:
We need to put the shade cloth on the east side of the courtyard. As the earth rotates during the day and the shadow’s position changes.
We need to find out what colour the shade cloth needs to be.
We also need to find out if we need posts or no posts.
We also need to find out how much money is it going to cost?
