STOPPING AT THE STOPBANK

Stopping at the flood banks

On Tuesday 14th of August, on the way back from the stadium, Room 3 and 9 stopped at Waihopai River.

Mrs Lieshout told us that there used to be low flood banks. So the water came into the houses when it flooded. I wondered if people died. There is water on the right side. There is a pump on the right side and it pumps some water into Waihopai River, so the water can’t go into the igloo house.

Just beside the bridge there is a funny looking pole that checks how high the water is in case it is going to flood. Some places weren’t flooded because they were on high ground. Thompson’s Bush was flooded all over.

We went for a walk across the bridge and to the other side of the flood banks.
Mrs Lieshout said if there were no flood banks, those houses would get flooded.
