Was that his tail?
There are a lot of types of Geckos. In fact, there are two thousand types of Geckos worldwide.
They live in rainforests and wet places, they also like trees, leaves and grass. They are very timid creatures.
They eat things like flies, mini spiders and birds. They like hunting for their own food; they hide in long grass when hunting. Geckos have very good characteristics. One great characteristic is how they use their tails to protect themselves.
Predators don’t come often but when they do come Geckos can make their tails come off. They do this so the predators think their tail is the Gecko. The predator chases after the tail thinking that it is the Gecko, while the Gecko runs free. The tail wriggles so it looks like the Gecko. Geckos grow their tail back after they loose their old ones. Sometimes when they grow their tail back they grow more than one, sometimes they grow 2 or 3 tails at the maximum. Geckos also store food in their tails so they don’t have to hunt all the time.
Geckos live a very long time. They live up to fourty two years in the wild. Geckos like being damp and wet, that’s why they live so long in rainforests.
The Duvaucels Geckos are the largest Geckos in New Zealand. Most of the Duvaulcels Geckos are grey and brown. The largest living Gecko in the world is is a 160 centimetres and 120grams.
So next time you find a Gecko you will know what it eats, where it lives and all the other things you have learnt about Geckos.

Tails falling off, this sounds really weird?
A Gecko is a thin, skinny type of lizard that has a detachable tail and a bumpy camouflaged skin to hide in the environment from its predators.
Geckos eat crickets, worms and other types of insects. Geckos have to be really quick and agile when hunting their foods, because if they are noticed by the prey, they need to make a move and get away as fast as they can.
Geckos live in long, thick grass, forests, jungles and even deserts.
Predators such as birds, mammals, snakes and spiders can hunt down Geckos when they want to and where they want to. When the predators have ago at the Gecko from behind, the Gecko will spring to action and run away. If the predators attack the Gecko on the tail or body, the Geckos tail will detach from the Gecko. The Gecko will run away and hide, while the Gecko’s tail still moves and the predators will eat the tail, thinking it is the Gecko.
After awhile the Geckos tail will grow back and become the new detachable tail!!

Cold-blooded tails falling off a reptile!
That reptile is a Gecko.
A Gecko is a cold-blooded lizard that eats flies and insects, smaller than itself. Geckos can also store food in their tails. A reptile is an animal that breathes air and has scales. Reptiles are cold-blooded. A Gecko is a timid creature. They live in deserts and grasslands.
The life cycle of a Leopard Gecko starts as an egg, then after a few weeks, the egg hatches and out comes a baby Gecko. Its mother starts teaching the baby how to hunt.
After 10 years of hunting and growing, the Gecko has changed from a baby to an adult and leaves its home and family and finds a new home to live in. Between the Geckoes birth and 5 years, the gecko will lay eggs (if it’s a female). The Leopard Gecko dies around about 20-30 years after it was born.
GECKOS
Geckos lose their tails when they are frightened.
Geckos
lose their tails when an enemy tries to catch it and eat it. Gecko’s tails work as a safety-device. The Gecko’s enemies think the tail is the Gecko so, the enemy chases after the wiggling tail, and the Gecko gets to safety.
After 2-3 weeks, the tail grows back. Sometimes the Gecko grows two or three tails! When the Gecko loses its tail, there is no blood and the Gecko doesn’t feel a thing. The severed arteries seal up so the Gecko doesn’t lose blood or else it would die.
So now you know why Geckos lose their tails and the life cycle of a leopard Gecko. You also know that Geckos sometimes lose more than one tail!

GECKOS
A gecko’s tail is a very delicate object.
The gecko is an average sized creature (1.2 to 6 inches 3 to 15 centimetres) and are the world’s smallest lizards. Geckos are usually grey, brown or a dirty white colour. Very few geckos are a bright green colour. In New Zealand there are 39 species of geckos.
Geckos come out at night and feed on crickets, insects, worms and they drink clean water.
Geckos have short bodies and soft skin. Geckos also have froglike heads. The gecko’s tail will fall off when grabbed by the tail or threatened. When the tail falls off it wriggles around and distracts the enemy. The enemy thinks that the tail is the gecko and the gecko runs away.
Geckos have flat toes. On the geckos flat toes there are tiny hairs. Geckos feet are very sticky so they can climb trees.
The geckos live in warm climates, rainforests, grasslands and deserts. In New Caledonia a few species give birth to the live young. But most geckos lay eggs.
The geckos have five main predators, they are birds, reptiles, snakes, spiders and mammals.
Some people have geckos as pets and they can live for 20 years or more when kept by people.

GECKOS
Where do you think his tail is?
Did you know a geckos’ tail falls off when a predator chases them?
Why is that you may wonder?
The predator thinks that the tail is the gecko so the gecko drops its tail and the predator eats it and the gecko will grow a new one.
A gecko likes to sleep or hide in desert, rainforest and grassland. Wow, that is a lot of habitats.
A gecko likes to eat worms and crickets (Yuck!) and drink clean water.
It has 3 predators like snakes, birds and other mammals.
They also belong to the lizard family.
It would be nicer to see them in lots of other places like in lots of bushes in the park, instead of in museums in a glass window with lot of lizards!!
