ANZAC
Boom boom boom the guns go off and the bombs blow up!!!

Wow, it is so awesome that our soldiers fought for our country. The New Zealand soldiers were very brave to go overseas and fight.

In 1914, Austro Hungary invaded Serbia and that was how World War 1 started. It ended in 1918, that was a long time ago.

Wives, girlfriends, partners and widows baked Anzac biscuits for the soldiers. New Zealanders are lucky that the soldier fought for them so that New Zealand would be living today.

Back in those days the weapons were deadly. They used tanks, machine guns, bolt action rifles and mustard gas. Mustard gas was the deadliest weapon used. The effects were: blistering skin, vomiting, sore eyes, internal and external bleeding. Death could take up to 5 weeks.

The soldiers lived in trenches, that is where they slept, ate and drank. Every year they have a rememberence day, to remember this day they have poppies because there were poppies at Galipoli.

World War 1 was a disaster but at least New Zealand is free today.

Anzac

In 1905, 58.014 people went over to Gallipolli to fight for World War 1. Anzac means Australia New Zealand Army crops. The uniform they wore was a hat, boots, top pants and a belt.

They took canned food and wrapped stuff. The soldiers could not take unwrapped stuff because the unwrapped food would get all mouldy.

They took waterproof sheets for their blankets and they took gas masks with them when the other country started bombing. They slept in trenches in groups of three and had blankets. They had water from Marine River.

We remember Anzac Day because of all the soldiers that died and all the soldiers that went to Gallipolli. Some would have no feet at all and some would have no legs at all if the trenches filled up with water because their feet and legs would rot.

The soldier’s families would send them more food if they did not have any food left, with more canned food and more wrapped food than before.

The year the soldiers came back was 1915 all wounded or burnt and with horrible memories. They didn’t want to talk about the war all they could hear in their heads was the bombs that went off when they were at war.
