WARNING!!!
CAR PARK NOT SAFE!!
Room 9 have been collecting data for a survey on Survey Pirate for all the adults to do on the car park. Just a couple of weeks ago in the news letter it had the survey web site.
Sometime we will have Constable Fenton to come and look at the survey. He will give us some ideas on the car park and what to do to 2make the car park a safer place.
We have noticed a few problems already like people running across the car park without parent supervision, the Oscar bus blocking others from exiting and of course people stopping to wait for their children at the pick up zone.
.
So far we have been doing some questions to ask Constable Fenton this term.
So if you have not been on the web site
Survey Pirate it is :

or you can find a link called Car park survey on this blogsite.

Inquiry Unit on the Car Park.
After looking at the photos we took of the car park before and after school and the survey we asked people to fill out on line, we have discovered that we have some problems in the car park.
Problems we discovered in the car park:
1. People driving both ways round the car park. Most people went left and around the car park. Some
went right and caused traffic jams.
2. People who were turning right when exiting the car park often caused traffic jams.
3. The Oscar bus blocked the way or children going to the Oscar bus were not safe.
4. People stayed too long in the Drop Off Zone and the traffic piled up behind them.
5. People in the cars couldn’t see past vehicles parked on the street, other cars in the car park or the
Oscar Bus.
6. Children not safe in the car park because there was no adult with them, the parents in the cars did
not come and get them, they did not wait for their parent’s car to come to the Drop Zone or little
children ran away from their parents.
7. The way people park in the car park.
8. People stopping in driveway to talk to their friends.
9. People going round the car park using their cellphones.
10. Sometimes new people to our school don’t know the rules.
What we found out from Constable Fenton
The definition of a road is: “Any area the public have access to with a vehicle.” Oreti Beach and car parks are roads and the Road Rules apply there.
This means that people should treat the car park like a road. The Road rules are the same in the car park as on the road.
Going Further.
These are possible solutions for us to research.
1. A No right turn exiting from the car park sign. RTL make these signs. So we need to get a cost for these.
2. Painting the car park. This would include: places for cars to park, a Drop Off Zone and a park for the
Oscar Bus. We would need to find out how big to make the car parks and design what we think would work. We could measure car park spaces or ask a Road Marking Service for advise. We would need to find out how much it would cost and who could do it?
3. Paint arrows so drivers would know which way to go. Paint line and No ENTRY/ NO EXIT on the
ground. We would need to find out how much it would cost and who could do it?
4. Fence and gate in place of hedge and along garden area so that children could only exit and enter
through pedestrian gate which the teacher on car park duty is in charge of. We may have to design this. We would need to find out how much it would cost and who could do it?
5. Have a way of letting new parents to our school know about the car park.
All of this would have to go to the Board of Trustees and the Parish Council and possibly the Catholic Education Office.

I think it is busier in the carpark when it is raining because people want to collect their kids at the drop off zone because they don't want to get out of their cars. molly
